The Real Truth about Homosexuality – by Fr. Michael Rodriguez

This is a presentation of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, specifically on homosexuality,marriage,and the family by Fr. Michael Rodriguez, to help dispel the false idea that this is about ‘personal opinion’ and actually is Church teaching.Unfortunately, one of the biggest problems within the Catholic Church today is dissent from Church teaching. There is dissent from Church teaching even at the highest levels of the hierarchy. It is indisputable that the main content of Fr. Rodriguez’s presentation on homosexuality is Catholic Church teaching, to which every single Catholic must give assent. A few sources which all Catholics ought to consult regarding the Catholic Church’s official teaching regarding marriage, including the particular topic of homosexuality, are the following:
Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. (#2357)
This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. (#2358)
Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. (#2359)

The importance of the family for the life and well-being of society entails a particular responsibility for society to support and strengthen marriage and the family. Civil authority should consider it a grave duty to acknowledge the true nature of marriage and the family, to protect and foster them, to safeguard public morality, and promote domestic prosperity. To understand why it is necessary to oppose legal recognition of homosexual unions, ethical considerations of different orders need to be taken into consideration. [6].
Society owes its continued survival to the family, founded on marriage. The inevitable consequence of legal recognition of homosexual unions would be the redefinition of marriage… The denial of the social and legal status of marriage to forms of cohabitation that are not and cannot be marital is not opposed to justice; on the contrary, justice requires it. [8]
It is true that all Catholics are obliged to oppose the legal recognition of homosexual unions; Catholic politicians are obliged to do so in a particular way, in keeping with their responsibility as politicians. [10]
